Teachtaireacht ón Uachtarán Ionaid agus Meabhránaí Eatramhach Comhghairdeas agus Fáilte. Inniu tá céim á bronnadh ort in ollscoil atá báite i dtraidisiún agus i stair. Bunaíodh Ollscoil na Gaillimhe sa bhliain 1845 mar aon le péire eile de Choláistí na Banríona, is iad sin Béal Feirste agus Corcaigh, agus chuir na chéad mhic léinn tús lena gcuid staidéir anseo sa bhliain 1849. Le 180 bliain anuas, d’oibríomar go dian dícheallach chun a chinntiú go mbíonn an t-oideachas is fearr faighte ag ár gcéimithe agus iad ag tabhairt faoin saol go mbeidh ar a gcumas tionchar dearfach láithreach a imirt ar an tsochaí agus ar an domhan. Baineann gnéithe de thraidisiún maorga na gcéadta bliain, in Éirinn agus thar lear, le searmanas foirmiúil an lae inniu, agus ina measc tá mórshiúl fhoireann acadúil agus oifigigh na hOllscoile agus an másaire ag siúl chun tosaigh, na róbaí acadúla, agus úsáid na Laidine, an Bhéarla agus na Gaeilge. Tagann an focal ‘university’ ón Laidin ‘universitas magistrorum et scholarium’ rud a chiallaíonn ‘pobal teagascóirí agus scoláirí.’ Is mór i gceist againn an pobal san Ollscoil seo, agus ón lá inniu ar aghaidh beidh tú mar chuid de phobal céimithe na Gaillimhe, pobal mór le rá atá de shíor ag dul i dtreise. Táimid thar a bheith bródúil as an éacht iontach atá bainte amach agat agus do chéim á bronnadh ort inniu. Ba cheart duit féin agus do chomhluadar a bheith bródúil chomh maith. Inniu an chéad lá den chéad chéim eile i do shaol, agus tá an t-eolas agus na scileanna cuí agat ó do cháilíocht chun tabhairt faoin aistear sin. Ar aghaidh leat anois, go n-éirí go geal leat agus go mbainfidh tú gach a bhfuil uait i do shaol amach. An tOllamh Becky Whay PhD (Briostó) An tUachtarán Ionaid agus Meabhránaí Eatramhach

Message from the Interim Deputy President and Registrar

Congratulations and Welcome. Today you are graduating from a university steeped in tradition and history. Originally established in 1845, University of Galway as one of three Queen’s Colleges alongside those in Belfast and Cork, and we admitted our first students in 1849. Over our 180 years, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that our graduates go out into the world equipped with the very best education and preparation to make an immediate positive impact in society and on the world. The formal ceremony today, which involves a procession of academic staff and officers of the University led by a mace bearer, the wearing of academic gowns, and the use of Latin, English and Irish, has a long and proud tradition spanning many centuries, in Ireland and elsewhere. The word ‘university’ comes from the Latin ‘universitas magistrorum et scholarium’ which translates as ‘a community of teachers and scholars.’ Community is something we dearly cherish here, and from today you will be part of our very prestigious and ever-growing community of Galway graduates. We are immensely proud of your outstanding achievement in graduating today, as you and those alongside you should be too. Today marks the start of the next phase in your journey through life, equipped with the knowledge and skills that your qualification represents. Now go forwards “ Sail away from safe harbour.
